Ehling was born in San Francisco, California on May 17, 1927, to German parents who had emigrated from Romania. Beginning at age 6, Ehling endured a difficult period in orphanages and grim schools. At age 15, he saw the famous body builder, Jack Lalanne, and was so impressed he began lifting weights to emulate him. Ehling also spent years as a union carpenter for the IATSE Local 44 in Hollywood.

Cheri Pann and Gonzalo Duran, a husband and wife team, are responsible for this local masterpiece. What started as a small bathroom project has since developed into the adorable couple’s shared passion for art—particularly mosaicking—that they have been plastering this home with since 1994. Pann, a painter, paints tiles while Duran, a ceramics artist, breaks them and lays them.
Though it’s not well known to the public, the moment you enter this large-scale artwork-in-progress structure, it’s like walking inside a coral reef. Most of the tiles are in the red, yellow, and orange spectrum, but bold colors radiate throughout the space. Almost every square inch of the home (including the outside) is covered in mosaic tiles.

I began a Facebook page that helped his work gain attention, and George enjoyed sharing stories and images with his international admirers. He told me, a couple of years before he passed, “I have faced rejection all my life, until I started tiling my house.” Here, the only critic that mattered was George Ehling himself.
